Dubai goes from business to music mecca

Posted on 10 June 2008 by JoyCeleb

Those who fetch $130 for a barrel of oil can call the tune these days. And it seems the tune is becoming so catchy that even Madonna, the original Material Girl, might be singing soon in this rich Gulf city-state.

Flush with oil dollars, Dubai is no longer satisfied with being just a business, tourist and sports mecca. It’s trying to boost its prestige further by pouring money into entertainment to lure the music industry’s priciest stars.

Santana’s February concert in Dubai was sold out. Last week, Jon Bon Jovi performed in Abu Dhabi, the Emirates’ capital just a short ride down the coast.

Justin Timberlake, Elton John, Pink, Aerosmith, Destiny’s Child and the Gypsy Kings have all entertained Western, Asian and Arab expatriates in the last few months in this string of seven semiautonomous states in the Persian Gulf. Music fans regularly fly in from Cairo, Beirut and elsewhere across the Middle East to hear their idols.

But a Madonna concert — if it happens — would take the musical glitz to a new level.

Earlier this month, the Dubai-based Gulf News daily and the tabloid 7 Days reported that the pop diva would come to Dubai this year on a tour organized by a Los Angeles-based events company, Live Nation, to promote her new album, “Hard Candy.”

Madonna might perform twice, the newspapers reported, citing event organizers familiar with the plans — at a public concert and at a private party, a first in her decades-long career. The price tag for the performances: more than $20 million, the papers said.

So far, however, Madonna’s publicists are publicly staying mum.

Nasim Tabatabaei, marketing and public relations manager for Live Nation Middle East, based in Dubai, said Madonna was still putting her tour together.

“She had offers from everywhere, and that could include the Emirates,” Tabatabaei told The Associated Press.

The mania over the possible Madonna concert is a reflection of the fact that the Emirates have seen “a huge jump in events here, both in the number of people attending concerts and in the significance of artists performing,” said Thomas Ovesen, managing director of Middle East AEG Live, the regional arm of an international company that produces live events worldwide.

The music boom fits in with the Dubai ruler’s ambitious plans to make the city attractive for the rich and famous, and to fuel mass tourism. Glitzy top-level sports, like March’s Dubai Tennis Championship, are another factor.

In terms of the concert scene, Dubai has people and firms that can pay top dollar “even though the event might not be commercially viable,” Ovesen said.

Artists who perform in Dubai expect to earn “twice as much” as they do in the United States or Europe, Ovesen said. He refused to disclose how much Bon Jovi walked away with after his performance for a crowd of 17,000 in Abu Dhabi. His company helped organize the concert in one of the most expensive hotels ever built, The Emirates Palace.

Not everyone is happy about the high production costs.

It’s “good that Dubai is on the radar screen of the world’s major promoters,” said Abdullatif al-Sayegh, chief executive of Arab Media Group, which along with Viacom Inc.’s MTV Networks International owns MTV Arabia.

But it’s “not so good that we are paying twice or three times as much” for concerts as do promoters in the United States and Europe, he said.

Yet, corporate sponsors are only too eager to throw their money behind music and sports heavyweights to raise their company profiles. Paul Idznik, Barclays’ chief operating officer, said his bank invested $9 million to sponsor the tennis championship the past three years.

An additional attraction for famous visitors and artists is the privacy in Dubai — filled with gated communities and a mostly nonintrusive local press.

“Celebrities come, relax, dine, party and shop without the media ever finding out they were even here,” al-Sayegh said. “That’s a great feeling for them and for us.”

In Franken’s Senate run, jokes are off record

Posted on 09 June 2008 by JoyCeleb

Former funnyman Al Franken hopes to convince Minnesotans that he can represent them in the buttoned-down halls of the U.S. Senate. So for now, jokes are off the record.

At a gathering of Democratic activists last week, the author, one-time liberal radio show host and former star of the late-night sketch comedy program “Saturday Night Live” swapped quips with supporters — after ensuring a reporter would not write them down.

Wearing a sober pinstripe suit, Franken vowed to defend the government programs that helped his wife through a hardscrabble childhood and called for universal health care and an end to the Iraq war. He promised a tough campaign against incumbent Republican Sen. Norm Coleman.

Norm Coleman is going to try to run away from his record,” Franken said. “I’m not going to let him.”

But observers say it is Franken’s record that could complicate his prospects in the November election.

Even in a state that once elected former professional wrestler Jesse Ventura as governor, the author of “Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right” must convince voters that he is serious, analysts say.

“If you’re the challenger, you only win by putting the incumbent in the spotlight. Well, for the past two months, Al Franken’s been in the spotlight,” Carleton College political science professor Steven Schier said.

Franken secured the Democratic endorsement over the weekend after courting each of the 1,400 delegates that attended the convention. He had raised $9.4 million for his bid by the end of March, more than the $8.7 million raised by Coleman.

A Franken win in this battleground state would help Democrats solidify their precarious control of the Senate. Most polls show Coleman leading, but The Cook Political Report, a Washington newsletter, rates the race a toss-up.

Republicans have mined provocative statements from “Saturday Night Live” and Franken’s books and radio show to paint him as undignified and too edgy for a state that prides itself on civility.

“There’s a lot to work with there,” Minnesota Republican Party spokesman Mark Drake said. “Things you can’t say in a newspaper, he said them, and he said them about people he’d have to work with in Washington.”

‘WRITING PORN’

Several Democratic members of the Minnesota congressional delegation have said they are worried that a sexually explicit column Franken penned for Playboy magazine in 2000 could distract from issues like the economy, health care and Iraq.

Coleman has also taken a dig.

“Eight years ago, I was making the streets of St. Paul safer and he was writing porn,” the former mayor and prosecutor said at the Republican state convention on May 30.

Another setback has been the revelation that Franken paid income taxes in the wrong states between 2003 and 2006. Franken blamed an accounting error and paid $70,000 to 17 states.

Franken has apologized for the Playboy column, but he said he won’t explain away his past.

“If I tried to put things in context or explain things as satire, and explain that satire involves hyperbole and irony and absurdity and parody of style … that’s all I’d do,” he said in an interview.

He said his books and radio show have given him a solid grounding in policy, and noted that two of his movies that tackled alcoholism are used widely in sobriety clinics.

The real scandal, he said, is Coleman’s tenure in the Senate. As head of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, Coleman opted to focus on the United Nations, a favorite target of conservatives, rather than the botched Iraq war, Franken said.

“He was put on that committee to not do his job,” he said.

Coleman, who ran for the Senate at the request of President George W. Bush in 2002, has emphasized his independence as Bush’s popularity has plunged in recent years.

A Coleman spokesman said he has worked closely with Democrats on the subcommittee to examine Iraq reconstruction and border security, and has voted against his party when he thought it would help Minnesota.

“Minnesotans do know the difference between a senator who is qualified to do the job, and a satirist who won’t even explain what he meant when he attacked people throughout the years,” Coleman spokesman Luke Friedrich said.

But Franken also will be able to draw on the fervent support of those who see him as a hero.

“Al was the only one who was standing up for us when Rush Limbaugh was beating us up pretty badly,” said Roann Carter, a Democratic activist from Minneapolis.

Kim Kardashian calendar photos leaked

Posted on 23 May 2008 by JoyCeleb

Kim Kardashian had planned to surprise her boyfriend Reggie Bush with some sexy photos taken professionally for a calendar she was going to give him for their one year anniversary. Unfortunately, her mom found the proofs for the calendar and decided to surprise Kim and send the photos out for publication.

Kim found out about the surprise when her brother Rob called her from a newsstand saying that he was looking at a calendar of her. Kim met up with her brother and tried to gather all the calendars that they could find.

In the end, Reggie of course ended up loving the calendar and Kim vowed that paybacks a b**ch.

For the photo shoot, Kim decided to have a little cellulite treatment called VelaShape. She also tried to have laser hair removal.

Jennifer Aniston Saving Sex for True Love

Posted on 19 May 2008 by JoyCeleb

Jennifer Aniston has decided to refuse to sleep with any of her boyfriends until she finds “true love.” A source claims that the actress, who was once married to Brad Pitt, is “saving herself.” A source close to the actress said:

“Jen’s made it clear to men who want to date her she’s not interested in one-night stands or flings. She’s looking for true love and she’s saving herself. Jennifer told me: I’m looking for the person who will love me for who I am, not what I am. I am not interested in sex for the sake of it.”
