Many Hollywood celebrities really behind Obama

Posted on 20 June 2008 by JoyCeleb

Many Hollywood heavyweights who had supported Hillary Clinton are rallying behind Barack Obama, pledging money and star power to his U.S. presidential bid before a big fundraiser next week.

Experts say that since Clinton conceded defeat this month after a grueling Democratic nominating contest, celebrities have quickly united behind Obama.

The result, they said, could be a campaign cash windfall for the senator from Illinois, but star support doesn’t necessarily translate directly to votes.

Sherry Bebitch Jeffe, a senior scholar at the University of Southern California, said that once a politician becomes known, voters look for candidates with positions they like and with whom they can identify, regardless of celebrity backing.

In fact, stars can cause harm if a performer’s public image rubs voters the wrong way. That happened when Jane Fonda and Barbra Streisand campaigned for former Texas Gov. Ann Richards in her conservative state, and Richards lost the bid.

“Sometimes they can come back to bite the candidate,” Jeffe said.

But Los Angeles is a town where stars wield a great deal of power and have money to spend, and numerous celebrities are expected to turn out at a Tuesday fundraiser featuring the singer Seal — at a cost of $2,300 per ticket.

Director Steven Spielberg and his partner in the Dreamworks movie studio, David Geffen, and Dreamworks Animation Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Katzenberg are organizing another Obama fundraiser later this year, said Andy Spahn, a consultant to the Hollywood power trio.

“If a Hollywood celebrity puts his or her mind to it, they’re good money raisers,” Jeffe said.

ALIGNING THE STARS

Mitchell Schwartz, who was Obama’s California campaign manager through the primary election season, said Obama’s appeal in Hollywood had been limited, until now.

“I don’t think we were the Hollywood candidate — ever,” Schwartz said. “I think Hillary might have been more … she might have had more support.”

Other Obama celebrity endorsers include actors talk show host Oprah Winfrey and actors Robert De Niro, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson and Halle Berry.

Billionaire Geffen upset many Hollywood power players last year when the longtime Clinton supporter broke for Obama.

Oscar winner Hanks, the star of “The Da Vinci Code,” gave money to Bill Clinton’s legal defense fund when he was president, but endorsed Obama with an online video in early May, when Hillary Clinton was still campaigning.

During the primaries, Obama had trouble attracting Hispanic voters in some states because, analysts said, some Hispanics were reluctant to vote for a black candidate.

But a pro-Obama video in Spanish with Hispanic actors Jessica Alba of “The Love Guru,” John Leguizamo of “The Happening” and comedian George Lopez, has attracted more than 250,000 viewers on the video sharing site YouTube.com.

“It helps build a broader sense of a candidate’s support,” said professor Chon Noriega, director of the University of California, Los Angeles, Chicano Studies Research Center. “But I don’t think that because George Lopez said support (a candidate) somebody’s going to say, ‘Well that’s who I’m going to vote for.”‘

Presumptive Republican candidate Sen. John McCain also has his celebrity endorsers, including actors Robert Duvall and Sylvester Stallone.

Hank’s ‘Angels & Demons’ Banned From Rome’s Churches

Posted on 16 June 2008 by JoyCeleb

Rome’s diocese said Monday it has barred the producers of “Angels & Demons” from filming in two churches for the prequel to the “The Da Vinci Code,” the popular book and film that angered many Catholic leaders.

Producers of the film, directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks, were turned down because the movie “does not conform to our views,” said Monsignor Marco Fibbi, a spokesman for the diocese.

The crew had asked to film in the churches of Santa Maria del Popolo and Santa Maria della Vittoria, two architectural jewels in the heart of Rome that include paintings by Caravaggio, sculptures by Bernini and a chapel designed by Raphael.

Permission was denied in 2007, but the issue surfaced only now that filming is ongoing in Rome, Fibbi said. The Sony-produced film was put on hold during the Writers Guild of America strike that ended in February and is now scheduled for release in May 2009.

Fibbi’s comments first were reported this week by the Italian entertainment magazine “TV Sorrisi e Canzoni.” “It’s a film that treats religious issues in a way that contrasts with common religious sentiment,” Fibbi told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. “We would be helping them create a work that might well be beautiful but that does not conform to our views.”

Fibbi acknowledged that the controversy over writer Dan Brown’s “The Da Vinci Code” and its blockbuster movie version had weighed on the decision.

The story drew anger and prompted calls for boycotts by church leaders worldwide with the idea that Jesus married and fathered children and by depicting the conservative Catholic movement, Opus Dei, as a murderous cult.

“This is a prequel to ‘The Da Vinci Code’ and it’s clear that the theme is similar,” Fibbi said. He added that the ban would not stop the crew from filming the exterior of the churches.

Brown’s “Angels and Demons” is a religious thriller combining an ancient secret brotherhood called the Illuminati, code-cracking, a papal conclave and a high-tech weapon threatening to destroy the Vatican.

It features Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon of “The Da Vinci Code” fame, played by Hanks in the movie.

Calls to Sony Pictures in London and Rome were not immediately returned Monday.

Tom Hanks Rescues Bride’s Big Day

Posted on 12 June 2008 by JoyCeleb

Tom Hanks came to a bride’s rescue, when filming of his new movie delayed her arrival for the wedding services.

A girl’s wedding day is arguably the most nerve-wracking of her life, and she certainly goes to sleep the night before hoping everything will run smoothly. Of all the things that could throw a spanner in the works, however, a Hollywood movie star blocking the way to the church with his latest production is not usually top of her list of worries.

That’s exactly what happened to one Rome bride-to-be this week, however, when the path to the church was blocked by Tom Hanks and the crew of Angels And Demons, who were busy lensing scenes from the latest adaptation of the The Da Vinci Code author’s work outside the Pantheon.

The cameras stopped rolling momentarily, though, allowing Tom to help the young lady and her father on their way. The movie heavyweight chivalrously offered the bride his arm and even helped keep her long veil from trailing on the ground.

His good deed done, Tom got back to work on set with Israeli actress Ayelet Zurer – last seen opposite Dennis Quaid in Vantage Point. In the new flick the raven-haired beauty’s character Vittoria joins forces with Tom’s brooding symbologist Robert Langdon on a mission to unlock the secret world of the deadly ancient brotherhood known as the Illuminati, before they can kill again

All hope is not lost — Tom Hanks is living proof of that.
